Free Wind or Bought Wind?
The Transition from Sail- to Steam-Powered Vessels
About our Technical Presentation:
The ISA New Orleans Section is pleased to have historian and author, John Laurence Busch, return for a second speaking engagement. John initially presented the history of how the first steam-powered ship, the Savannah, came to be, in our March 2018 section meeting. As a follow-up, John will present further research for an upcoming book that looks at the technology shifts from natural wind power to “bought” steam power.
About our Guest Speaker:
John Laurence Busch is an independent historian and author who focuses upon the interaction between humanity and technology, with a particular specialization in the first generation of steam-powered vessels. He has devoted years of research to discovering the true story of Captain Moses Rogers and the steamship Savannah. This research is the basis for the book “STEAM COFFIN Captain Moses Rogers and The Steamship Savannah Break the Barrier”.
