Presidents Message – October 2018

ISA New Orleans Section Members and Prospective Members,

We are deviating from our normal first Tuesday meeting cadence this month and will be holding our next meeting on Wednesday, October 10th.  ISA New Orleans Section will sponsor the local IEEE/IAS chapter meeting at MS Benbow on that date.  Our goal is to drive awareness of ISA within the IEEE community.  To that end we are bringing back our heavy hitter, John Laurence Busch, to speak again.  Many of you attended John’s wonderful presentation at UNO back in March.  In this follow-up presentation, he will discuss the long evolution from natural sail power to artificial steam power.  He will then analyze modern-day efforts to re-introduce sail power to artificially-powered vessels and the rationale for creating these retro hybrid-power configurations.  Register to attend this session at the following link.  Please note we will be charging $10 for this meeting to offset lunch and speaker expenses.  If you are an IEEE/IAS member, you can attend this meeting at no charge.

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month.  ISA New Orleans Section is participating as a Champion for awareness thanks to Webmaster Wayne.  You will find nearly daily posts and updates on both our blog and Facebook page.  Please follow, read, and share updates on various Cybersecurity topics.  #CyberAware.

On Saturday, October 20, we will be participating as an exhibitor in the 2nd Annual STEM Fest event.presented by Chevron at the Superdome from 10AM to 2PM.  The purpose of the event is to drive awareness and interest in Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) education and careers.  Our participation as an exhibitor supports our mission to promote and encourage automation as a profession through outreach to industry, academia, and STEM programs.  Our exhibit will demonstrate a new Augmented Reality application through a comic book with a drone manufacturing theme.  You can check out the details here.

The ISA Fall Leader’s Meeting will be held in Montreal this month along with the annual ISA Honors & Awards Gala on October 14th.  I am honored to be receiving the “Excellence in Enduring Service” award along with all the new Fellows and Honorees.  Please know that I accept this award on behalf of New Orleans Section and all the great people I have had the privilege to know and work with since 1998.

We are still working to build our meeting agenda from November 2018 to August 2019.  If you have an idea for a topic or you want to present a topic, please reach out to me at dabickerton@reynco.com.  We also rely on our sponsors to provide topics and funding to keep our meetings at a low cost.  If you would like to have your company sponsor the section, you can click here to pay the $150 annual sponsorship.  We will promote your company on our sponsor page and at our monthly meetings.

Best regards,
Dean Bickerton
