Presidents Message – January 2018

Happy New Year ISA New Orleans Section!

We are excited to kick off the New Year.  We already have a few events planned for the year and want to hear from you on topics and speakers you would like to see in upcoming meetings to enhance your knowledge in Automation.  Maybe you have a topic that you would like to present which would benefit others?  We would like to hear from you.  To this end, our first meeting of 2018 will be this Tuesday, January 9th from Noon to 1PM at MS Benbow and Associates.  We will host a “Town Hall” style meeting to give you an update on the Section and gain your feedback on what we can do to provide value to you and our members in 2018.

In the meeting we will also provide you with an update on our parent ISA organization as a whole.  Our section Secretary, Bill Brock, attended the Fall Leader’s Conference in November and will present the highlights from the series of meetings and presentations he attended.  Bill will discuss ISA’s core competencies which will continue and give a glimpse of future direction.  He will also highlight the most active Standards on Alarming, Control Valves and Actuators, Wireless, HMI, SCADA, and Cybersecurity.  All of which are good topics for future meetings.

To register for Tuesday’s meeting, please go to – https://www.eventbrite.com/e/january-2018-section-meeting-tickets-37736257161.  You can attend live or via web.  We will open the doors at 11:30AM to allow everyone to grab lunch, socialize, and get settled.  We will start the meeting promptly at noon.

I do want to give you an early announcement on our March 13th meeting.  Author and historian, John Laurence Busch, will present on the first break through technology in history for artificial power, the steam engine.  Many know the story of James Watt and his patented steam engine and Robert Fulton’s first commercially successful steamboat, but do you know the story of the first steamship, Savannah, and its journey across the Atlantic?  John Busch will give a historical prospective on alternative energy and hybrid systems from his book, “STEAM COFFIN:  Captain Moses Rogers and The Steamship Savannah Break the Barrier”.  Mr. Busch has presented to many technical organizations in many parts of the World.  We are fortunate to have him come speak to our Section.  Stay tuned for details…

I would encourage everyone to check out our website for upcoming events and to pull down presentations and collateral from past events – https://neworleansisa.org/events/.  We had several members watch presentations to catch up on their PDH requirements for the year.  We invite you to do the same.  We strive to provide value to our automation, engineering, and technical community.  If we can provide some value to you personally or professionally, please let me know.

I hope to see you at our meeting this Tuesday.

Best regards,
Dean Bickerton
