Presidents Message – January 2019

ISA New Orleans Section Members and Prospective Members,

Happy New Year!  My last message to you was back in October when we hosted a meeting for the local IEEE/IAS chapter, participated in STEM Fest at the Super Dome as an exhibitor, and attended the ISA Fall Leader’s Meeting in Montreal.  We decided not to run monthly meetings from November to January, but I am happy to report we have a full slate of activities lined up from February through June.  We are beginning to post these now on our events page – https://neworleansisa.org/events/

Our first meeting for the new year will be a luncheon on February 12th at MS Benbow and Associates.  We will meet at 11:30 to socialize and grab lunch.  The presentation portion of the meeting will start promptly at noon.  This month I will be presenting an update on ISA Technical Report 101.02 – HMI Usability and Performance.

When I attended the Fall Leader’s Meeting in Montreal back in October, I stayed an extra day to sit in on the ISA 101 Working Group 2 standards meeting.  I have been an Information Member of ISA-101 for several years now and take great interest in the work this group is doing to make HMIs more effective.  Effective HMIs yield improved safety, quality, productivity, and reliability.  Working Group 2 just released the 9th draft of their Technical Report 101.02 on HMI Usability and Performance.  This will be voted on in the next few weeks and will result in the official release of this TR if successful.  I will present an overview of what you can expect from this Technical Report with many example screens and displays.  It does a great job explaining to the user how to build effective HMIs.

For more information on the meeting and to register click here.  As always, we will also have this meeting available via web simulcast, and we will archive it along with the presentation on our website as well.

You may recall, I did an overview presentation on ISA-101 back in September 2017.  You can click here to view the recording and/or download the presentation from our meeting archives.  This was a presentation on the standard itself, the “what” if you will.  Now we will explore the “how”.

I hope to see you at our next meeting.  Look for my February President’s Message next week.

Best regards,
Dean Bickerton
